Global analysis of plastid diversity reveals apicomplexan-related lineages in coral reefs

چکیده
Figure 1. Phylogeny of novel ARL plastids and their environmental distribution. (A) Rooted phylogeny of plastid 16S rRNA showing the positions of all new apicomplexanrelated lineages (ARL, white type on black). For each plastid lineage, the number of environmental sequences detected is shown in the grey box (for alveolates this includes all sequences identified, for other groups only sequences detected in the automated search). Rappemonads and unidentified clone S25_1200 fell within the haptophytes in these analyses, and red algae were paraphyletic. The tree was constructed with RAxML and numbers at nodes correspond to support from rapid bootstrap/PhyML SH-like aLRT/MrBayes posterior probability when greater than 50/0.90/0.95 (supports inside ARL-I and ARL-V clades were omitted for clarity). Black dots indicate complete support. (B) Global distribution of ARL-I (Vitrella), ARL-III (Chromera) and ARL-V from environmental 16S and 18S rRNA sequences. Current Biology Vol 22 No 13 R518

Effect of sea surface temperature (SST) changes on coral ecosystems in Kish Island
Background and Theoretical Foundations: Coral reefs are one of the world's most attractive ecosystems. They have been covering large parts of the world in the tropic areas. Coral reefs in the Iranian waters of the Persian Gulf are largely limited to the Islands. Many factors, including natural and anthropogenic activities cause stress to the reef communities affecting reef development. Coral bl...
متن کاملErratum: Molecular characterization reveals the complexity of previously overlooked coral-exosymbiont interactions and the implications for coral-guild ecology
Several obligate associate crabs and shrimps species may co-occur and interact within a single coral host, leading to patterns of associations that can provide essential ecological services. However, knowledge of the dynamics of interactions in this system is limited, partly because identifying species involved in the network remains challenging. In this study, we assessed the diversity of the ...
متن کاملBiodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)
The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...
متن کاملFactors mediating plastid dependency and the origins of parasitism in apicomplexans and their close relatives.
Apicomplexans are a major lineage of parasites, including causative agents of malaria and toxoplasmosis. How such highly adapted parasites evolved from free-living ancestors is poorly understood, particularly because they contain nonphotosynthetic plastids with which they have a complex metabolic dependency. Here, we examine the origin of apicomplexan parasitism by resolving the evolutionary di...
متن کاملUsing high-throughput sequencing of ITS2 to describe Symbiodinium metacommunities in St. John, US Virgin Islands
Symbiotic microalgae (Symbiodinium spp.) strongly influence the performance and stress-tolerance of their coral hosts, making the analysis of Symbiodinium communities in corals (and metacommunities on reefs) advantageous for many aspects of coral reef research. High-throughput sequencing of ITS2 nrDNA offers unprecedented scale in describing these communities, yet high intragenomic variability ...
